My Fair Lady - Julie Andrews
It's really quite a pity that Julie Andrews was passed over for this role which she made famous when it came to the movie version. Oh well...

Just to separate a little fact from fiction--Julie Andrews has stated a number of times that she would have done the film if it had been offered, but it wasn't, for the reasons stated (she wasn't known in Hollywood and there was a rumor that she wasn't photogenic). When she was offered the part of Mary Poppins, she said she would do it if she weren't offered Eliza. She wasn't, she did Poppins and the rest is history. Thank goodness there are two wonderful recordings to document her portrayal.

Julie didn't get it because she didn't have a big enough "name" in the film industry. It's a shame they picked someone who couldn't sing the songs!

I am fairly certain that she was offered Mary Poppins, turned it down b/c she was pregnant, and they said they would wait. She was never in the running for the movie of My Fair Lady, Jack Warner is on record as saying that she wasn't a bankable name in Holywood. Disney would have allowed her to make it first, has she been offered it.

The reason why Julie Andrews didn't do the film version was because she was already filming Mary Poppins at the same time. Both films were released the same year
