the term "Jap" is traced back to WW2 where anti-Japanese sentiment is rampant.So yes, Jap or Nip (short for Nippon which is the term for Japanese people in their own language)is derogatory and often time used in a mocking gesture.

Really? I like Japan and have nothing against the culture or people but I use 'Japs' all the time, I think of it as like saying 'Brits'. I just use it as an abbreviation, not to wrongfully label a particular race of people. Do the Japanese take offence from hearing the word 'Japs'?
