dont u mean david simon. Well Simons book "Homicide" has even won a few book of the year mentions recently by newspapers who liked the wire so much they gave his book that honour even though it was written 17 years ago

You should read David Chase's book HOMICIDE. He wrote it several years before The Wire. Great book. Sopranos is my second fav show. Band of Brothers/Deadwood probably third.

The Wire has some great one-liners. The scripts are pretty much flawless. The Baltimore slang seems to take on an epic Shakespearen quality. 'If the man comin', make ready fo' the man!'

The purpose of someone's best/favourite show is if that person can watch the same thing again and again, the same applies for films. I like BSG coz I can watch it like 4-5 times a day!The Wire is in a long line of shows that are "considered" great. I have watched episodes before but personally Cop/Criminal Drug stories don't interest me, sorry :(.The Wire, Lost, BSG, Six Feet Under; there is no such thing as a great show, just opinions and opinions of those who watch it.

The Sopranos is a well-executed show, but it grows tiresome watching episode-after-episode of chronically misanthropic characters, and it doesn't really address itself to social issues the way The Wire does, making The Wire a much more important show, if not a better one (which I also think it is). The Wire features more intellectually engaging plots, and the characterization is more compelling (a few people manage to actually achieve positive personal growth -- though obviously not everyone).

I enjoy Battlestar Gallactica, but it's not in the same league as The Wire. Six Feet Under may be, though from what I've seen of it, it's not my particular cup of tea.

No it didnt influence the wire. The sopranos have plots and stories and good guys and bad guys and 1 liners, just like every other tv show, just better quality. The wire on the other hand doesnt have much use for plots created by imaginative writers and instead simply shows life as it is day to day in the institutions with none of the charactrers having their own little storylines to flourish in. Sopranos was made to make money. The wire was not.

Just through my way in season 2 and its fucking awesome. It's like watching a 13 hour film.

I haven't watched the Wire, I will get into it soon after I have a clearer schedule with University exams, but to be honest at the moment, Six Feet Under & the NEW Battlestar Galatica are the best shows ever for me.
