The Romani word Roman (Romano (m) / Romani (f) / Romane (p)) is likely to be derived from the Indian word Raman (Ramana (m) / Ramani (f) / Ramane (p)). Rom (husband) is probably a short easier spoken form of Roman and Romni (wife) is probably a short form of Romani.

The old English way of spelling Romania was also Rumania. This alternate way of writing Romania is in both Romanian and in the English language. Perhaps he should spell this way to help reduce confusion. Search Rumani and see the results - i.e. Rumani-Albania 6-1

The problem with XzZyBiT is that the plural for a Romanian in the Romanian language is 'Romani'. The fact is he is not speaking in the Romanian language he is speaking in the English language which does recognise Romani as an ethnic group from India - also referred to as Roms, Romane, Roma, Tsigane, Cigane etc but often mistakenly refered to as Gypsy which is short for 'Egyptian'.
