well obviously they are not physically real, however they do represent real people, 2d is Stu-Pot who was hit 2 times, one in every eye by Murdoc, the rapper in the anime. 2d does not stand for 2 dimensional in his case, it stands for a nickname that Murdoc gave him meaning 2 dents, one in each eye.
