Well, I cannot confirm it and maybe you are right, but originally Terry planned to record the song with the Beach Boys and never so its fruition, so he releases it on his own. the song was authored by Jacques Brel, but Terry changed the third verse lyrics

He claimed to have written it?Most of it is just a cover of Jacques Brel's Le Moribond, with slightly different lyrics and a few changes to the chorus.Brel's version is far more scathing, as it's a farewell to his friend, and is generally saying nice things to him, but then says that he knows that his friend was having an affair with his wifeIt's far better!
