This kind of Luta-livre started as detractors from BJJ who said BJJ could not be effective in a real life situation if they kept trainning with the gi. Today, every BJJer abandon the gi when training for MMA. Luta-Livre does protect the passing of the guard, but it is much more difficult to do without the gi, but it's also more difficult to control once you passed the guard, so this balance things.
