From a cuban:Afro-Cuban rumba is entirely different than Ballroom Rumba, or the African style of pop music called rumba.Rumba developed in rural Cuba, and is still danced in Havana,Mantanzas,Santiago de Cuba and other Cuban cities as well as rural areas, especially those with a significant or predominant black community, although now it is infused with influences from Jazz and Hip Pop.A Cuban Rumba song often begins with the soloist singing meaningless syllables, which is called diana(s).More

In Cuban music, Rumba(span: Bohemian life style, Bandolera) a generic term covering a variety of musical rhythms and associated dances. The rumba has its influences in the music brought to Cuba by Spanish colonizers as well as Africans brought to Cuba as slaves. Rumba developed in the Cuban provinces of Havana and Matanzas in the late 19th century. As an energetic Afro-Cuban dance, Rumba was often suppressed and restricted because it was viewed as dangerous and lewd. More to come

I agree with Taura9!!! Ballroom dances names are confusing and if you were going to call the dance Rumba at least use some rumba steps. For example, in the international latin division you guys have a dance call "jive", There is nothing latin about jive... I'm not saying this dance is not valid dance form but stating the naming catargories are a bit misleading.

LOL...no doubt. I remember watching So You Think You Can Dance a couple of seasons ago, and Alex D. had to teach them a Cuban Rumba...he asked if they had ever danced this, and they said "Yeah...it's like the Waltz, right?" BOY....he let them have it!! LOL! No street dancing is close to ballroom, period! Don't get me wrong, I have mad respect for ballroom dancers, they're true artists, but street dancing...ETHNIC street dancing is a nother story! It's natural, it flows, it's pure,it's our roots!

Salsa also known as Mambo IS from Cuba. BUT! You must know the history of Mambo in the U.S. And you would know how it came to be what it is. And Puerto Ricans and Cubans and even African Americans were instrumental in creating or popularizing mambo/salsa in the U.S. and throughout the world.
