No... The Father was just a composite character of some of the many hundreds of people who were falsely accused of being a communist. The times then were so paranoid, that even the accusation, or even the question of being a communist was enough to crucify someone's standing in the community. McCarthy was running wild accusing people across all spectrums with his House Unamerican Affairs Committee.

Senator Joe McCarthy led a campaign in the fifties based on the rise of communism. The senator, taking advantage of the nation's fear of communism and rising to fame, falsely accused hundreds of Americans of being commies, mostly intellecuals: Professors, writers, actors, directors. People were told to not trust their neighbors and those accused of being commies were fired and socially isolated, leading many, like Babe and Doc's dad, a victim of McCarthy's communist witch hunts, to suicide.

i just picked up this book today and read it cover to cover. it was an amazing book, however, could someone please help me with something? could someone explain what Babe and Doc's father did to Mcarthy, was he ruining a political campaign or something, does the story about Mcarthy have any fact base, i am only 16 and do not know much American political history. im just confused as to what H.V. did to get himself discredited and eventually led to his suicide

Olivier should have recieved more Oscars and not just nominations. The man was without doubt the greatest actor of the (20th Century).
