It's not a message one way or another. He's showing his remorse for getting rid of the child while at the same time has done the action of getting rid of the child. It can be taken either way, but mostly it's narrative.

there isnt no message to the song, its not about a pregnant girl, its about when his girlfriend got an abortion. it doesnt have to mention it in the song, but thats what its about

Ben talked about it and said that's what it was about. He said that he and a girlfriend once made the choice to give up their baby and it eventually broke them up. After that he didn't really want to talk about it, he just wanted the song to tell the story.
