The first recorded instance of thise song is actually in Scotland about 100 years before the Dubliners were even an itch in their dads balls. Though we are not sure of the exact history of this song, we do know it pre-dates 1848, and it commonly accepted to be temperance song, so no later than 1829. As with almost all songs of this age, we don't know who wrote it. The first modern recording (as in on a record/LP, tape or CD) was actually the seekers, not the dubliners.

eireog08 your wrong the song was first sang by the dubliners and was writing by Luke kelly so thats prove thats its an old Irish drinking song
