Right on the no conversion, sucks. The only way you can tell is if you're fortunate enough to have a 71 engine that stayed identical in 72 w/no changes. Luckily, some of my Pontiacs were like that from 71 to 72. The hp change on paper was pretty drastic --- a 300hp 400 dropping to 250hp in 72 under the net system on an identical 400 motor.

Yeah, theres no conversion as far as net vs gross, as all engines respond different to mods (intake, exhaust) so the only real way is to put em all on the dyno, that would give u real hp. Its a shame they never recorded net hp pre '72.

The deputy at 6:00 is "Grossman" from CHIPs, LOL. Chips started in 1977 I believe, or one year after this movie.

I just relooked up the 401's hp, I was wondering if 330hp I said a month ago, was NET or GROSS, 330hp Net would be a little high. Because back in the day, the most powerful NET engines never were over 300hp. Example--1973 T/A w/SD455 rated at 290 hp Net (Gm's highest HP engine in 1973) ran low 13s. It would be in the low 400s if in gross hp. Just looked up the 401 on NHRA. 401 was 330 Gross in 1971, then 240 Net in 1972. Makes sense.

Net is measured with all things attached, aircon, waterpump etc accept the transmision (power at the flywheel).Gross was nothing but an engine i.e. no exhaust, air filter etc. so it gave it a theoretical max hp.

PS correction-- in the first paragraph I said gross in 72 and after. I meant to say 1972 and after was NET--measured at the rear wheels with all power robbing accesories. BEFORE 1972--GROSS--measured at the flywheel, no loss of power thru trans, etc, and sometimes belt accessories removed, etc.
