Adnan Yaakob - Go to Hell

THERE is a Malay saying about the dangers of putting your foot in your mouth. Kerana pulut santan binasa; kerana mulut badan binasa (Because of the glutinous rice, the coconut milk is spoilt; because of the mouth, the body is destroyed) goes the saying. And this is the situation the Pahang Mentri Besar has got himself into, according to Utusan Malaysia. In the Bisik-Bisik column, Awang Selamat took Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob to task for flinging the words "go to hell" at journalists in the state assembly on Monday. The columnist said some people thought they were so powerful they could say whatever they like without considering the consequences. "Perhaps that it is the reason the Pahang Mentri Besar told reporters to 'go to hell.' He can naik angin (get mad). I too can get mad at times. "But the Malays are very cultured people. No matter how angry a person is, he should always watch his mouth and actions. Losing one's cool is not an excuse for not watching what you say, more so if you are a leader," said Awang. The columnist said it would have been more effective if the leader concerned had reprimanded the newspaper for its mistake in a well-mannered way. Adnan was angry that an Utusan report had wrongly quoted him as giving the Prime Minister an ultimatum to pay the state RM150mil to RM200mil to stop all logging activities. Explaining his outburst, Adnan said he was really upset by the report and questioned its motive. Utusan front-paged a Bernama report where Adnan said this was the first time he had used such words in his eight years as Mentri Besar. He said the report could have caused a misunderstanding between him and the Prime Minister. "I am only human. When it was made to appear as if I was not loyal to the Prime Minister, I was furious because the Prime Minister deserves to be supported," he said. Utusan also devoted a whole page to comments from MPs, the public and others on the matter. Shariman Mohd Zain, who works in the private sector, expressed regret over Adnan's comment, saying it was shocking and unprofessional, while Nurazliza Abdul Manan said he should have corrected the mistake through a closed-door meeting or a press release. The Terengganu Press Club called on Adnan to withdraw his offensive remarks and to apologise to the media while Pontian MP Hasni Mohammad said it might be a misunderstanding. It was also pointed out that Adnan had "misbehaved" in the past when he showed a vulgar sign to the opposition party during a by-election in the state. In another column in the daily, the writer said words were a reflection of one's personality and leaders should be cautious of every word they used.
