Premiere of Helix by Esa-Pekka Salonen
World Premiere of Helix - Composed by Esa-Pekka SalonenValery Gergiev, conductorWorld Orchestra for Peace 28 August 2005BBC PromsRoyal Albert Hall, LondonIn this highly inventive piece, Esa-Pekka Salonen creates one long musical spiral by speeding up the tempo but yet lengthening his phrases, building up such pressure until finally the music is pushed to the breaking point - and then stops. Mixed with his usual colorful, virtuosic orchestral writing, it's a crowdpleaser.

Its very simple to be dismissive, anyone can be a critic.

Reall, really good stuff overall. I've never been the biggest fan of modern composition because everyone just tries to "out-weird" the other with very bizzare harmonies and melodies. It has a very sci-fi take to it. Wouldn't be surprised if excerpts get used in some alien film in the near future. As a music major, I'm just curious what kind of insane harmony he studied to create a piece like this, as well as his crazy solo piano composositions.

This is the first piece of Salonen's Ive heard and i love it! it is amazingly atmospheric; bugger-off anyone who say "its boring, its been done before, its too dissonent, its not dissonent enough". this is a lovely piece of music!!

Heads up - I don't think the word "bore" works as a standalone noun, therefore, "work of bore" doesn't actually make sense.

Do they really make batons that small?

Here here. Salonen obviously knows what he is doing with an orchestra but the material is pretty banal.

Nice piece, I remember seeing on TV when it came on a couple years back and liking it upon first impression - and I still do.It does remind me much of parts of Jerry Goldmith's score to "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", and that's a good thing. I do look forward to hearing more of Salonen's works.

Absolutely love this piece. The bassoon/piccolo combination at the beginning is very haunting. The final accelerando is fabulous, with the heavy brass rhythm seeming to drag behind, and then be pulled along by the rest of the Orchestra. Love the abrupt, manic ending!

This is just a stunning piece. Esa Pekaa Salonen writes amazing music and really knows how to write for the orchestra and make it exciting.
