Richard Wagner - Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral (from Lohengrin)

Montage - Recently, I was revisiting some instrumental sheet music I had the privilege of playing in high school - Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral was one of them. As I got listening to it again, it came to me that the perfect images to grace a montage is actually one of Wagner's contemporaries, William Bouguereau. (Both from the Romantic era.)A perfect 'marriage' of sound and artistry - well, at least I thought so :)The only other Bouguereau montages I see on youtube use music like bach, which doesn't make sense to me - wrong time period. eh.

Wow. I never had so much background on the opera. Elsa's is the only piece from Lohengrin that my band has played.

And Elsa does not die. She does lose Lohengrin, who goes to heaven (he's a son of Parsifal and a seeker of the Holy Grail).Elsa at least gets her beloved brother back--he'd been enchanted into a swan by Ortud. And she has the memory of that great music during the walk to the cathedral. :)BTW Dr. Lucien Caillet, who arranged the Procession for wind ensemble, went to my dad's church when I was growing up in Kenosha, Wisconsin. A wonderful man with a real feel for Wagner's music.

This is *literally* Elsa's bridal procession for her marriage to Lohengrin (who is incognito). You may be more familiar with the music from the prelude to Act 3, the Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride). In the opera, just before the climactic chords of this music, the two antagonists appear, claiming fraud and wizardy. Elsa assures Lohengrin of her willingness to marry and the procession continues to the final glorious musical apotheosis. and on to Act 3...

Ah...Wagner...Chairman of the Board. Simply magnificent. Almost brought tears to my eyes. So central European. Is there any composer more moving than Wagner?

...marvelous the whole theme is based and inspired by the aryan iranian mythology! look for parsifal, the persian sassanid prince...wagner just like nietzsche was inspired by the rich iranian aryan soul and mythology. niebelungen is nothing but modern version of 7000 years old zarathustrian iranian mythology...search in internet, find out about your roots!

I remember our director telling us this is her procession to heaven. Hence the GLORIOUS ending, it never failed to give me chills, leaving me gasping for air. (I played trombone, haha.)

And I'm pretty sure that she goes to her death, but I haven't actually seen Lohengrin, so...

my old director told us that it's a bride making her way down the isle on her wedding day...
