You can hit certain keys while playing notes and it will change the sound. For instance, play an A with octave key and hold down the bottom three keys (just like playing a D without the 3rd top finger down). It will change the sound of the note. It's just a cool effect. Michael Brecker uses it a lot in Delta City Blues.
