Feb 2003Meet Melissa -- a happy, healthy woman. Probe a little deeper however, and you uncover a life marred by secrecy and shame. "At four I was taken into hospital ... I was absolutely terrified and woke up in a lot of pain. No one would tell me what was happening." It was not until she was 18 that she finally discovered why she was forced to endure such painful operations. She has an intersex condition. Thankfully, the treatment of intersexuals has improved a lot since Melissa's childhood. In this beautifully made, insightful film Melissa, Barbara, Mary and Saraswati speak candidly and eloquently about living with a hermaphrodite condition. In the words of Saraswati: "it might be trouble for other people to accept our genders, but not for us."

That's the question, isn't it?! Terms you might look up are phenotype, xenotype, and karotype, for starters! I'm putting together an Intersex Playlist on my channel right now. Come & see. Mishakailana is especially informative.

How is gender defined, apart from different genitals and a slight, or big ? (which I tend to not believe), difference in hormones ?

This is interesting... I don't have a strong gender identity, meaning it isn't important to me, much, so it's interesting to see how strongly others feel about gender and sure they are, say, "female". How does it happen that to one it is a small issue and to another a question of life... and death ?

I was in the middle of watching this video when my internet shut down. I immediately came back (w/in less than 2 minutes) and could not get it to come back up with a message saying "we're sorry this video is no longer available"? Please let me know if this video becomes available again I would love to finish watching it.

i feel great empathy for those bornwith this condition. both my parentsare gone now but i wondered if i wasborn with some unusual sexual condition.i began to develop pubic hair ( i am male) at about 7. years old
