The bass player is the great Paul Chambers, who made signifcant contributions to the jazz bass throughout the 50s and 60s until his untimely death in 1969.

There's no question as to how good Davis and Coltrane were. Davis was all tasty and Coltrane was like shred. (They were cuttin' heads, no doubt - you could see it on Miles' face when he stood off stage) But how about that bass player? Does anybody know who he is? He was amazing.

Miles looks so cool when he's just chillin' and smoking a cigarette while John and the piano player (can't remember his name) are soloing.
