If you really want the portrait of a horrible social condition filmed by a great director, see some movies by the never-too-estimated Pier Paolo Pasolini, a director who learnt at his best the lesson of neorealism and really made some pieces of great cinema. This is what I think about "The Bicycle Thief".

No analysis, no reality, nor the raw portrait of a social condition, neither and intellectual work which could point to a particular aspect of the object the film narrates.Only the smart operation of a mediocre director who had been mistaked for a master and a great artist.

Personally I think that "The Bicycle Thief" is one of the most overestimated films of italian cinema. Fuck the stupid rigmarole about the italian post-war, the poverty and those fucking bicycles in which critics find an imaginary symbol of poverty, while those bicycles are only fucking bicycles.I think that "The Bicycle Thief" is only a rough melo made to move the poor italian spectator who recognised themselves in a plot that always blows them below the belt to let them cry.

I don't think so. As an italian, in every discussion about italian cinema and neorealism, i have always to hear the usual arguments about "The Bicycle Thief": the historical and social constest, post-war, the rough narration, the roman architecture and all that sort of bullshit beacuse of which people waste the word "masterpiece".
