You can't say he doesn't have an open mind just because he doesn't like the sound of a banjo; people can't just change their tastes. He does, in fact, have an open mind for having given it a shot in the first place. That's all you can do - try stuff out!

It wouldn't be the same, a guitar and banjo are different instruments dude, and play differently appart from the sound. But everyone is free to their opinion.
