so the guy was naked? if anything he touches gets cloaked, then the pole would be. if it were a bubble around him, the handle of the pole would be distorted.

FWIW, Photoshop has been around since 1990... and it had the cloning tool back then, too. Besides, there were other, decades-old, ways of compositing photochemically.
