Undertow by John Mackey (LMC '08 Band 1)

This is a video that my brother recorded of the 1st band at Longhorn Music Camp 2008 playing Undertow by John Mackey. This is the 4th and final piece of the concert. This is by far our coolest piece. Everyone in the band loved it and the audience seemed to also. Undertow is the coolest band piece I've ever played. I played Tenor Sax in the band. All the music was so intense. The players all got really into it, and so did the audience. Something worth noting (since it added quite a bit of difficulty to the piece) was that for almost all of the piece the time signature switched between 7/8 and 4/4 every measure. The tenor sax probably had the best woodwind part. Many times, I would be the only woodwind playing a certain part, and along with the high brass an octave lower or be the only person playing a low woodwind part in a woodwind feature.I wanted to add a huge "UP YOURS!" to the fat ass and his dad that were being so annoying and making lots of noise and bothering the audience around 1:40. Luckily, the music drowned out their talking.2:37 to the end is the best part of the piece. The percussion parts are incredible. If you wish to hear some of John Mackey's other works (which I would really recommend), please visit WWW.OSTIMUSIC.COM. He's an awesome composer. This video was recorded on June 28, 2008.

John Mackey's pieces are awesome! We're playing Kingfishers Catch Fire, and it's tough, (especially while marching!) but it sounds incredible.

thanks... yeah it was hard though. but it was expected. my bands never really got anything above a 3 all my years of highschool (and i'm a senior), so i mostly just focus on region and solo&ensemble.hey good luck at area though! who knows maybe ya'll will make it.

awe, man. that sucks. i'm really sorry. it must be really hard since you're such a good musician. my band got a 1 and we're going to area next week, but i'm not expecting to even place in the top 10. it would be cool though. if you wanna check out our show, it's really good (but the videos on here aren't). i'll probably upload a video next week after area. it's called made in america by the mcneil marching band.

man, my highschool band could probably pull this off pretty well. we're not as good as the lmc band was, but we're still pretty awesome. as a freshman i had no idea what to expect so a good band was a nice surprise!
