Its an exercise to teach you how to deal with oncoming force and redirect it with your physical structure in order to throw, sweep, push or lock your opponent. It begins as pre-arranged drills and moves into freestyle push hands which is basically stand up wrestling. Once you know how to push, sweep, throw, or lock your opponent in freestyle manner then strikes are added to the equation to make it san shou or free fighting.

a high stance is more natural than a low stance. This is a more natural expression of fajin. One should be able to be rooted even when standing tall.

his legs aren't bent as much as you think they need to be because once you get to his level you're grounded not matter your stance. With a tall stance you have much more of an ability to move around and "give in".

I totally agree with you. Besides the physical structure, when Master Feng unbalanced me he did it with moves I recognized from the Hunyuan forms and silk reeling excercises. One way a master teahces you correct execution is by letting you feel how his kua, waist, legs, torso and upper limbs move so that you move in the correct way as opposed to what a beginner may think he/she is seeing in the movements.

makes sense, I suppose I was thinking more in terms of a different purpose of pushing hands, not just feeling someones structure, but of learning what is applicable, the best way I have found to do that is touch on all levels, hands, elbows, knees and feet....anyone with a good amount of training can fa-jin a student across the room----to make something truly applicable---need feeling on all levels
