Karajan and Bernstein are so damn popular because they cared more about publicity than the conductors before them, not to mention that Karajan always opted for tame, crowd-pleasing sound and interpretations. I recommend you seek out Rene Leibowitz' and Ferenc Fricsay's recordings of the Ninth for sleeker, gruffer, more passionate and spontaneous rendition of the 9th. If you're feeling adventurous give the '51 and '42 9ths by Furtwängler a try, the sound is bad, the interpretations are godlike.
