Raiden II's OST is one of the most purely melodic game soundtracks around. Just beautiful. And this is a great take on the original music!

FM = frequency modulation. It's how non-wavetable synths make sound. Furthermore, any DAC stage WILL contain a low pass filter of some stripe. They don't all affect the sound the same way as the one in the SNES. This is basic audio and synthesis knowledge.Lemme guess: you're making your own emulator because you can't swing the $20 for MagicEngine, right?

You are right about the fact that the sound of the SNES is little bit muffled because of the low pass filter applied to the signal. But it could (when programmed properly with HQ samples) sound very good.FM sound programming is very difficult and therefore many Genesis games sounds awful. There is exceptions though.

Technically the PSG part of the HuC6280 is very simple. It has only got 32 sample steps per audio channel. By looping the 32 samples and divide the PSG clock(3.58Mhz) with a 12 bit frequency value you finally got the sound. Because of the limitation of only 32 steps per sample the result is more like a PSG(NES) than a sample based sound hardware(SNES). The SPC700 in the SNES is superior, but in the end it's up to you to decide which actually sounds best. Some people prefer the sound of the NES.

You are wrong.... (I know cause i'm coding a new PC engine emulator right now). The sound chip of the PC engine actually has some FM capabilities, but very limited compared to the Genesis though. Almost no games makes use of the FM sound anyway, cause you lose one sound channel. You are wrong about the filters, there is no filters at all.

Actually, the PCE used FM and filters to get its sound. It was just a different sound from the Genesis and SNES. :)It could be great if someone knew how to use it (Air Zonk springs to mind).

Which is incredible since TG-16 is really an 8-bit machine.

fair enough. I dont remember any "annoying" SNES filters though... ever heard the Doom port to the console? some of the best music I've ever heard on it ^^

Anybody who knows good music when they hear it knows Turbographx had the best sound chip in the 16-bit era. No screechy FM channels (aka Sega Genesis) and no ugly annoying sound manipulating filters (aka Super Nintendo).

I believe they also upgraded the sounds as well.
