Well its great to look back at these classic McCartney tunes, as they are always teaching the listers something new all the time! just like all the Beatles material! they all have something to teach for everyone of all ages. and My history teacher taught me this about the English/German football match on christmas 1914. all sorts of things were taught about Britain in my Canadian history class. as my Country of Canada has a lot British heritage. quite interesting things!

Yes,correct, it was christmas, and just like this video portrays the execution and the abrupt stop of peace by the commanders at around 3:02, where there were explosions of some sort. shortly after that you see McCartney run for cover and sleep. seeing that most people would rather do that than fight a war. and my teacher taught me this too! The lyrics to this song tell the whole moral.

it was at christmas, right? They played football then went back to war. Most of the troops didnt want to fight and were excecuted by their commanders, my teacher told us. Is that right?

This is just such a beautiful song, with such a hope filled meaning. Its just a shame that a song with such idealistic hopes is not heeded more?

Ok, although I was only 8 years old when this song came out, I have always liked it, and although I remember (very vaguely) my mother saying something about its meaning when it was released, I did not realise until just now when reading your post just exactly the true meaning of it. I am ashamed that in this instance my history of my country of origin (UK) is obviously very poor and that I was (almost) unaware of such a major depiction of peace as this video.

To answer the your question of 'what the fuck?' (wtf), this video is based on a true story in world war I, the English and their Enemy (Germany) decided to have peace for one moment and play a game of football in no mans land. just the whole moral of peace. and it gives a point of, what would you rather do..fight and kill people in war? or have peace and sleep?

A wonderful "any time" song.

His last good melody? It was his last number 1 in Britain.
