it doesn't matter that he struck the bat at the tip of the handle. watch a few bat breaking videos from baseball, and you'll notice any ball striking the bat at that same point breaks it the same exact way. they break almost uniformly when in new condition for a reason, the catchers safety (not to mention it's all wood, and type has little to do with that). if you don't believe me, do some research. youtube should have enough evidence. go ahead. I'll wait

droman30, while I agree with you that it would be much more difficult to break the bat at the widest part (if not impossible) the point that is being made with Shinjo Sensei's demonstration is that Okinawan karate, espcially the Naha-te based systems like Uechi-ryu place special empasis on conditioning. Go check the vids of Shinjo breaking boards with his toes and fingers. As for the 'ki' comment you need to understand Okinawan culture to grasp what he means by it. In Japan 'Ki' is everywhere.

hmmm.. the dude who held the bat didnt seem like it had much force.. think about it.. if he hit the bat with another bat the bat would almost fling out of his hands and vibration would hurt a little too.

Breaking bats is no big deal. Any healthy person that spends a month solely training that strike will be able to do it. As I accurately pointed out it would have been an entirely different result had he attempted his strike at the thickest part of the bat. I have broken wood thicker than where he is breaking the baseball bat with strikes before. Really, it's no big deal. It doesn't require a black belt or a special focus on ki energy or any crap like that.

You try it if you think it's a 'budo trick'. Shinjo Sensei a is living legend for his breaking and fighting ability not only within the Uechi community but also all around the world. There's a reason he's called the Okinawan Superman.

I don't think it was cut prior to the demonstration. The bat was struck at the weakest part. Just like all "Budo tricks" this one doesn't rely on some special insight or secret mystical energies that normal people don't have access to. It would have been an entirely different result had he tried that strike at the barrel of the bat.
