Stephane Grappelli plays Gershwin


 
   

Grappelli was amongst the most important pioneers of the jazz violin. Here, at the age of 81, he plays two numbers of Gerswhin in New Orleans, in the year 1989.Someone To Watch Over Me - and I Got Rhythm. Be sure to check out the latter.

I'm a staunch atheist... BUT, I'll give you this: there's no way to account for the truly-creative talents of folks like Stephane Grappeli, Django Rheinhardt, etc, without appealing to *some* intangible source of inspiration.There's certainly no way to account for them within secular intellectual frameworks, short of dismissing them as random aberrations.

When he breaks into "I Got Got Rhythm", I can't help but smile. Listen to Grapelli and then tell me there isn't a God. Where else could such inspiration come from.

I met Grappelli in '89 in Cambridge, England, after a concert when I was 16. He was polite and gracious. Wonderful man, wonderful music.
