Neil knew what he was writing about, and that's good enough for me.The rest of us may be able to relate to how our lives may have been similar in ways, but that means we may need to write our own song, given that none of us really live the same life as another. Thanks for sharing something of yourself with us, Neil.

Yes one can make various interpretations of this song. As it came out on Rust Never Sleeps in late 70s I guess it referred to what dipper mentioned earlier. Neil lost a lot of friends to drugs in the 70s and this song seems to relate to this. Of course at the end of the day only the great one will ever be able to explain the real meaning of it. Long live the great man

"They were lost in rock formations, or became park bench mutations, on the sidewalks and in the stations, they were waiting, waiting" refers to the ones that gave up and just got lost, became homeless, just started walking around aimlessly.

"They had he best selection, they were poisoned with protection, there was nothing that they needed, nothing left to find" refers to the people that grew up in good families that had enough money to take care of themselves, therefore they didn't have the inspiration to go out and succeed on their own.
