Henry Gross - Shannon (1976) (((Stereo)))
Listen in (((Stereo))) Add &fmt=18 to the end of the page URL and reload it.Henry Gross produced a single, "Shannon", a song written about the passing of Beach Boy Carl Wilson's Samoyed (dog) of the same name.(Henry had an Irish Setter also named Shannon)(I used the Irish Setter as a the videos subject) The single went gold and became a worldwide hit, reaching #6 on the USA charts in 1976.At age 18, Henry was a founding member of the world famous rock 'n' roll revival group Sha Na Na, playing guitar & wearing on-stage the "greaser" clothes he wore in high school. The group's popularity took a giant step after legendary performances at the Fillmore auditoriums in New York and San Francisco and the Woodstock Festival.Interesting sidenote:The Casey Kasem incident"Shannon" is remembered for being the subject of a profanity-laced tirade by American Top 40 radio show host Casey Kasem while recording an episode of the show in 1985. A listener had requested "Shannon" as a "Long Distance Dedication" (a regular feature of the show) to his own recently-deceased dog. Kasem was upset that the show's producers had placed the dedication immediately following the Pointer Sisters' hit "Dare Me", an up-tempo song that Kasem considered a poor lead-in to a sad song like "Shannon".~Ric~Lyrics:Another day is at endMama says she's tired againNo one can even begin to tell herI hardly know what to sayBut maybe it's better that wayIf Papa were here I'm sure he'd tell herShannon is goneI hope she's drifting out to seaShe always loved to swim awayMaybe she'll find an islandWith a shaded treeJust like the one in our backyardMama tries hard to pretendThat things will get better againSomehow she's keepin' it all inside herBut finally the tears fill our eyesAnd I know that somewhere tonightShe knows how much we really miss herShannon is goneI hope she's drifting out to seaShe always loved to swim awayMaybe she'll find an islandWith a shaded treeJust like the one in our back yard ...Just like the one in our back yard .....

RicBNH His first single release on the label, Shannon, a song written about the passing of Beach Boy Carl Wilson's Irish Setter of the same name went gold and became a worldwide hit. Sales of the album called "Release" were big and the second single, "Springtime Mama", sold just short of gold.

My dog Heckter was killed by a car in 1975, I have never really shaken that dog, he was so special, he just was the kind of animal that you never find again, thank you Henry Gross from Sha Na Na for singing that song, my daughter is named Shannon, not related to the story, but I always think of her when I heer this..

I love that we have a site like this to find these treasures. What a great tune. I learned to play this by ear, on piano, over twenty years ago and its still one of the first tunes I play when setting down to a new keyboard.
