You should hear her in Ariadne auf Naxos. I can't imagine it being sung any better.

Kirsten Flagstad, the greatest Wagnerian soprano of her time, premiered these songs, Strauss MEANT them to be sung by a big voice. BRAVA JESSYE. Elizabeth Schwarzkopf? YUCK!

Seems like it would be impossible to have a voice too big for Strauss.

I'm playing this piece now with a reknowned singer and I am having to play so soft I am almost sucking. Would be nice to have a singer with some carrying power.

I so hope that a broader audience discovers Norman´s outstanding interpretations of the Four Last Songs. I never would have thought that a powerfull dramatic soprano as ms Norman would be so enormously skilled to master her big voice and modulate it so impeccably to the lyrics (flawless German) andtenderness of Strauss. The orchestration by the Leipziger Orchestra is a tour de force per se. Brava, Norman!

Ms Norman´s outstanding interpretations of the Four Last Songs are unsurpassed. The Leipziger orchestra is stunning. Ms Norman´s skillfull holding back of her impressive vocal instrument in order to be true to the lyrics and the themes is a tour de force. Sublime! A recording that will be historical.
