Your sort of right. My Ford Fiesta is a five speed manual and it has the same layout on the top of the gearstick. Reverse doesnt have a "branch" coming off, it just has "R" stamped on it.

cars back then had metal bodies so they lasted a lot better. the test they are doing conceds that the two drivers didn't see each other untill it was to late otherwise most people would be slamming the brakes which would lessen the impact a bit. some of the older trucks before 1995 are a bit weaker. I know this from experience, my coworker ran a stop sign in a 93 dakota and slammed into a small sedan and the front of his truck was completely obliterated.
