This was the first concert of the choir's tour through Japan. The concert was in Tokyo and the japanese emperor was in the audience so it was decided to use the text. Of course we sung everything by heart in later concerts.

I sang this with a girls' choir about 25 years ago in Toronto. Still brings tears to my eyes when I hear it.

There is 1 simple answer Kolkrabe19... Tradition. This is how it is done for about any classical choir. I for one was a member of a choir when studying music in college and never did we leave the text aside. We knew the lyrics by heart for sure, but it is part of the tradition.

What an experience for a boy to be a member of this school. And what could Schubert have written had he lived another forty years!

Glorious singing from this acclaimed Vienna boys choir. Bravo! TY.

This is very well sung but I do not understand why the text cannot be learnt by heart. They are WSK, not some school choir. I think the choir should not only sing but make contact with the audience also.

We sang this in our school chamber choir! I'd never heard of this piece before, its one of the only pieces that I thought I'd break down during haha! You really experience the sheer glory of the music as you sing it, it's as close to God as music will ever come in my opinion.
