Eino Leino's "Nocturne" has always been my favorite poem, and this has always been my favorite melody for it (I think there's altogether three different versions...)Sung by Anu Hälvä. English translation (by Keith Bosley):The corncrake's song rings in my ears,above the rye a full moon sails;this summer night all sorrow clearsand woodsmoke drifts along the dales,I do not laugh or grieve, or sigh;the forest's darkness breathes nearby,the red of clouds where day sinks deep,the blue of windy hills asleep,the twinflower's scent, the water's shade--of these my heart's own song is made.You, girl as sweet as summer hay,my heart's great peace, I sing to you,O my devotion, tune and playa wreath of oak twigs, green and new.I have stopped chasing Jack-o'-Lantern,I hold gold from the Demon's mountain;*around me life tightens its ring,time stops, the vane has ceased to swing;the road before me through the gloomis leading to the unknown room. (*I'm not sure why, but there are two versions of this line. The other one goes something like "I hold the gold of happiness in my hand")

Joskus olen jostain lukenut, että Nocturnessa alkujaan oli tuo hiiden vuori kohta. Se seutu joka Leinon innoitti tuon runon kirjoittamaan, siellä oli korkea kukkula tms jota sanottiin hiiden vuoreksi ja siihen liittyi uskomus että siellä olisi kätketty kulta-aarre. Leino muutti tuon kohdan runossa muotoon "onpa kädessäni onnen kulta". Ilmeisesti sen takia että oli rakastunut erääseen naiseen. Eli molemmat kohdat ovat oikeita. Lauluun tietenkin sopii tuo nykyinen muoto

Olen jo pitkään ihmetellyt tuota kohtaa. Muistelen että vanhempien runokirjasta löytyi tuo "hiiden vuori" versio, ja kun kysyin siitä isältä, hän muistanut edes "onnen kultaa" koskaan kuulleensa. Ja pitänee mennä tutustumaan sinun suosikkeihisi. "On suuri sun rantasi autius" on todella kaunis kappale.

Katsoin juuri paristakin eri runokokoelmasta sita runoa ja kummassakin oli "onpa kadessani onnen kulta." (Sorry, it's too hard to make up correct letters, I don't have a Finnish keyboard.) I looked at your videos and your favorites and it seems we like similar music. This morning, I found many several versions of "On suuri sun rantasi autius"--it must be the saddest song ever written, but oh, so beautiful. Anyway, I'll be looking for more wonderful listening from you!

Vera Telenius? Ok, pitääpä kuunnella. :)And right you are. I just was too lazy to make changes to the translation. ;) Do you know, btw, which of the Finnish versions is original? I've seen both "onpa kädessäni onnen kulta" (gold of happiness) and "omani on Hiidenvuoren kulta" (gold of demon's mountain), and I find this kind of confusing...

Kiitos tästä. Mielestäni Vera Teleniuksen tulkinta on paras. I have a couple of commnents about the translation: Chasing a Jack o'lantern is definitely wrong because jack etc. is a carved pumpkin lantern for Halloween. The corret translation of virvatuli is "will o' the wisp.(Ignis fatuus in Latin so there is no confusion.)And "I hold the gold of happiness" in my hand is the correct version of "onpa kädessäni onnen kulta."

Makuasioita. ^^ Vaikka täytyy myöntää etten itse ole vielä löytänyt "sitä oikeaa" tulkintaa tästä runosta. Ei Loirikaan huono ole, mutta... no, ei vain jotenkin iske minuun.Kiitos paljon kommentista. ^^
