Curtain ideas: Ikea, remnant fabric, perhaps Sari fabrics... Jewelry storage for earrings =see through tackle boxes from Wal*Mart found in the craft section as well as in the fishing section.. for bracelets, use the plastic shoe containers with lids. You can take T-shirts and cover pillows for pops of color!! Easy, Easy, Easy!

That's a good point, I know how you feel. Since modern can be interpreted individually, all I can say from experience for cheap, eco-friendly solutions is stick to buying things used and adding fresh coats of paint. Yard sales do not = vintage. I see plenty of modern things, from sofas to dressers, etc. A fresh coat of paint in appropriate colors is all used things (even if they are vintage) need to feel modern. Buying used is cheap and keeps landfills empty. I hope that helps.
