"The Heiress" (1949) Part 10
The prolific William Wyler deftly directs Academy Award-winner Olivia de Havilland and Montgomery Clift in this masterpiece drama of love, deception, and betrayal. When handsome but penniless Morris proposes to Catherine, an aristocratic but neglected and attention-starved young woman living with her callous father and frivolous aunt, her father believes suitors could only be after her inheritance and threatens to disown her if they marry. Based on the stage version of Henry James' Victorian manners novel "Washington Square".StarringOlivia de HavillandMontgomery CliftSir Ralph RichardsonMiriam HopkinsWritten by Ruth and Augustus GoetzMusic by Aaron CoplandProduced and Directed byWilliam Wyler

FilmVintage,Possibly. But the love he might have felt for her was secondary to the wealth he definitely wants more.

I think in the beginning he was just a simple gold digger. But when he came back and saw that she had grown up and become a truly self-possessed woman who could stand up for herself and be strong, he truly fell in love with her.But by that time, it was too late.

The scene between father and daughter is especially poignant. You can see the moment, in his eyes, when he realizes that his careless and dismissive attitude has turned a loving daughter into a very hard hearted woman, and that he has lost her completely.
