I looked it up - and in fact, Maher is an out-and-out atheist and libertine. He's the type who thinks that the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards - with his past history of drug abuse (heroine, cocaine, alcohol, his father's ashes) - is a legitimate role model to be emulated by all.

Penn is part (self-hating) Jewish from his late Communist father, Leo Penn, and part (anything but practicing) Catholic from his mother's side.
