Iranian Embassy Siege 1980
In 1980 gunmen held 26 people hostage at the Iranian embassy in London. After several days the SAS anti terrorist team went in and rescued the hostages and killed the gunmen. Notice how they all talked so posh on the TV in those days.

Just as well that I didn't say that the SAS did kill the hostages, then.

The glass is highly reinforced, bullet-proof, and triple pained. They used the 380 gram plastic explosive to make sure they got through.

Thanks for your responding on behalf of someone else. Also, thank you for looking into some of the facts in this siege - it's always far more interesting to discuss matters with people who have learnt a little about this tasking. I remember the day it happened and it's very interesting to see people still showing an interest now.

Ever heard of the police?

When you reach a state of affairs in which law and order is enforced by military personnel, you end up with something like Communist Russia in the 1940's. The SAS (as much as I admire them) follow orders and would not have the situation assessment skills that are vital to maintain law and order in a democratic, free country. Britain is lower in crime than ANY country where military personnel enforce law and order (i.e China). Check the statistics.

THe British Rapid Response Team is the equivilant of the S.W.A.T team. I think its more accurate to say that SAS is the equiviland of the Delta Force. Only that SAS take part in counter terrorism as well as military operations.

Why people comment in such a negative way i do not know. It just shows that their really childish. Well done to the lads in that siege, and to future situations.

Back in the god old days when our service men were supported and respected by our government. Good luck to our lads fighting a war that can not be won, bring our men and women home to sort out this fucking state of a country, it needs a good seeing to. With military on the streets enforcing the law we will have a fraction of the rime we have today. Id love to see the results of some chav scum trying it on with one of the military's best, you know it makes sense.

If you ever were lucky enough to meet a member of the SAS, they are often quiet and withdrawn, totally focussed and often very polite. So in effect you would never know. They would certainly not advertise their intent on YouTube. At the end of the day, they are soldiers, often each having a particular individual skill, but working as a unit. Not exactly your average bloke off the street then!
