When they swing slow they do not carry the momentum into the firm front side. Most people who teach and say squish bug do not really pay attention to this one seemingly small but very important detail. Most people just rotate, (squish the bug) on the ball of the back foot. They are missing a lot of bat speed that is generated by the lower body and these are the people who generally collapse the back side causing the hitter to miss or generally pop up.

caspermilktoast77 (September 28, 2008 at 7:30 am)
stew- dont back down to these guys who dont know what they're talking about! if your hands start at the shoulders and the pitch is between the knees & waist, what direction do they have to go?short & direct to the ball keeping the barrel above the hands.yes power hitters have a slight upward swing which comes after they've taken the barrel to the ball.FORGET the internet gurus, the self proclaimed experts! mankin, englishbey, nyman, epstein, oleary, these guys are mostly full of crap.

Actually u dont want to hit down on the ball in the traditional sense. The idea is to have a slight uper cut on ur swing so ur "on plane" with the ball. it can almost double ur contact zone. look at some of the mlb guys, there is a slight upper cut, im not talking about the fatty one like jim edmonds.

lenski1965 you obviously never played a college sport because your life consist of class then down time then lifting/conditioning then down time then practice and you repeat that six days a week during the fall. And hitting down on the ball is the way to do it if you have an upward swing you will either hit the ball with too much topspin too carry it over the fence or will hook the ball if you do get under it.
