Yeah, it a tail rotor failure. The tail rotor works against the centrifugal force of the main rotor and so if it stops working, the helicoptor will spin. Lucky he wasn't a lot higher. I should know - I was in Nam! (read about this sort of thing in Chickenhawk - good book)

you can tell his rotary blades (back) hit the ground because of his retarded landing, causing a spin.
