dohboy07, they are speaking literally. It costs money to actually join the church and advance through the ranking system. So far, if you want to "know everything" about scientology and reach OTVIII, you have to pay around the neighbhorhood of $333,000. And while you may have a "free" decision to join the church, it will cost you dearly to leave it. Expect harrassment, at least.
